The TPE Precision R56 MINI Open Cone Relocation Intake Kit offers the key benefits of a front-mounted intake system at a lower cost than the full carbon fibre airbox version. Designed for the R56 platform, this intake improves airflow efficiency, reduces intake temperatures, and provides a true plug-and-play upgrade for MINI Cooper S and JCW models.
This system shares the same core design philosophy as TPE Precision’s carbon fibre intake, relocating the air filter to the front of the vehicle for improved cold air supply, while using an open cone filter to reduce overall cost.
Key Design Objectives
Eliminate restrictions in the intake path
Reduce intake air temperatures
Shorten airflow distance to the turbo
Plug-and-play installation
More affordable alternative to the carbon fibre airbox kit
The TPE Precision intake significantly shortens the air path, reducing the distance between the air filter and turbo inlet to under 250 mm. This creates a smoother, more direct airflow with fewer restrictions, improving throttle response and consistency.
By relocating the air filter from the rear of the engine bay to the front of the vehicle, the intake draws cooler ambient air from the same location as the OEM system. This helps minimise heat soak compared to traditional engine-bay intakes.
Fitment and performance were validated using 3D scanning, CAD development, and 3D-printed prototypes, ensuring accurate installation without modification.
TPE Precision Open Cone Relocation Intake Kit for MINI R56
(All testing performed using the TPE Precision carbon fibre airbox version)
All dyno runs were completed on the same day, on the same vehicle, using the same fuel and hardware.
Vehicle specification before intake upgrade:
-
JCW airbox with high-flow panel filter
-
Full exhaust and downpipe
-
Intercooler
-
Charge pipes
-
ECU tune
Dyno results:
-
1st run (OEM intake): 232.8 HP
-
2nd run (TPE intake only): 241.5 HP
-
3rd run (TPE intake + retune): 249.5 HP
Note:
-
The 232.8 HP figure was the highest result achieved with the OEM setup before heat soak reduced output.
-
The 241.5 HP and 249.5 HP figures represent the lowest numbers recorded with the TPE intake installed.
Conclusion:
-
Gains in horsepower and torque across the entire RPM range
-
Consistent performance, even after repeated dyno runs
